A Rainy Day Lesson

It was a rainy day. Zahran was watching his phone as usual. His battery became empty. “Mother!” he yelled. “My phone’s battery is empty. Can I have your charger to charge my phone?” But at that moment, a big mango tree fell down, crashing into the wires that were connecting his house.

“ZAHRAAN!!” came his mother's angry voice. “Did you plug your father's old charger into the switch like you did last month?”

“No, Mother. I learnt my lesson for that,” said Zahran. He had recently plugged in his father's old charger, which had caused a big power cut last month. His father had scolded him very much.

“Malik! Can I have your phone?” asked Zahran.

“Sorry, mine doesn't have even a little bit of charge,” said Zahran’s elder brother Malik, who had got a phone as a gift from his parents for graduating from university last year.

“Malik, Father is calling you and Zahran to the garage to fix his car,” said their mother. “Come and eat after your work.”

“OK, Mother,” said both of them as they went to meet their father.

“Put on two pairs of gloves from that corner and come help me fix my car,” said the boy’s father.

While they were fixing the car, the children’s cousin, Mahir, came running, and he was crying. “My father has had an accident; he is in the hospital, and so is my brother Mahmoodh. He got hurt when a tree fell over our house due to the fast wind yesterday,” said Mahir. “Mother asked if we could come and stay here for a few days?”

“OK,” said the boys’ father. Zahran was so shocked. “How did this happen, Father?” he asked.

“It is all Allah’s wish, my son,” said his father. “If we don’t have Allah’s blessings, we cannot even live. Therefore, we must always pray and ask Allah for His blessings.” Zahran had not heard any of this; he was busy fixing the car. He just said, “OK, Father,” and later went to have dinner with his father.

The next day, someone knocked on the door. Malik went to open the door. It was Mahir and his family. Mahir’s father had a broken arm. Mahmoodh had a bandage on his forehead and was crying. Mahir’s father said salam and greeted them, and they were called inside.

Then, Zahran remembered what his father had said about Allah's blessings. Zahran thought, “How would it be if I had those injuries? How would it be if I didn't have enough food to eat, or water to drink, or without a place to live?” Then he thought, “But Allah has given me a place to live, good health, and lots of food and water, but I waste food and water, and I waste my time watching my phone and television. Hereafter, I will pray five times a day, ask dua, and ask for forgiveness, good health, and I will be a good boy. Then, I will have Allah's blessings and live a healthy life.”
