Surah Al-'Ankabut (29:20)

Say, ˹O Prophet, "Travel through the earth and see how He originated the creation; then Allah SWT will produce the last creation; for Allah SWT has power over all things."

This ayah is taken from surah Al-'Ankabut, which means "The Spider". It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad SAW in Makkah and contains 69 verses. This surah speaks on several topics such as faith, human duty, the divine trial, the history of certain prophets, prohibition of unfair disputes and reliance on others instead of Allah SWT.

Verse 20 persuades us to trust in Allah SWT. The disbelievers of Makkah believed that it is Allah SWT who created the whole universe, but they deemed it impossible that people will be resurrected after they die. This ayah asks them to look around to appreciate the magnificence of the creation, so that they may understand that the one who created this marvellous creation can easily repeat the process.

In this incredible verse, Allah SWT tells us to travel, look and observe the world around us and think about how Allah SWT originated creation and will then destroy it. Allah SWT will resurrect the creation on the Day of Judgement. This clearly explains Allah SWT’s power and capability to do everything, even restore creation back to life.

This ayah is of great importance as it explains to us that it shall increase our faith and sincerity in our actions, through recitation and understanding. This has a significant impact on a believer's life and helps them remain steadfast on the path of Allah SWT. A different verse in the Quran illustrates that when Prophet Musa AS was at the Red Sea with his people, his steadfast faith was rooted in Allah, as he declared:

 إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ

Indeed, my Lord is with me; He will guide me." (26:62)

Allah SWT explains that Musa AS and his people were saved. We should always have deep trust in Allah that empowers us to face even the most challenging situations.

Furthermore, we strive to make a positive impact in the world for Allah SWT - even if it feels like our efforts won't lead to significant changes as they may seem slow. We continue to work on becoming closer to Allah SWT because while we recognise our limits and inabilities, we turn to Him, who is capable of all things.

In conclusion, this ayah is a reminder of Allah SWT’s wonderful creation, resurrection, life and death to strengthen believers in their dedication to the right path. This emphasises the importance of preparing for the Day of Judgment and the reality of the afterlife. May Allah SWT guide us all on the straight path. Ameen.
